Curatorial Statement
Growing in influence internationally, South Korea has built a strong foundation for its vibrant art communities to engage with American audiences. The Korean art community reflects the complexity of modern life by embracing a multitude of differing viewpoints, and the resulting cultural friction between traditional and contemporary art has subtly reshaped the public perception of the modern Korean aesthetic. As advocates and members of the international art community, IMUR Gallery exhibitions are infused with a commitment to support young, emerging artists and a responsibility to preserve the established artists. Our exhibition Tradition, Identity and Future Narrative combines young, emerging Korean artists with more traditional established artists, reflecting the duality of modern Korean society, wherein a carefree pop youth culture coexists with a historical mandate that venerates family and tradition.Cultural exchange introduces the new voices of young artists and shines a light on established artists, amplifying the universal connections between people and cultures, and fostering a deeper understanding of the unique history and culture of South Korea.Tradition, Identity and Future Narrative seeks to promote, nurture, explore and expose forward-thinking and innovative Korean artists (emerging and established) to art lovers of New York City and internationally.
